Summary
Language classes are inherently diverse, in many ways, but the neurodiversity found in each class can affect group dynamics, student well-being and ultimately, retention and achievement rates. Teachers need to consider which small changes will have positive effects in their classrooms, in terms of the physical and social environment, the learning approaches encouraged, and the accessibility of activities.
This course offers you an opportunity to reflect on your current context and determine which aspects could be made more neuro-affirming and inclusive, empowering you to support all of the learners in your neurodiverse language classroom.
Syllabus Plan
There are 4 themes, each with 2 sessions, so 8 sessions in total. They should be worked through in order.
Theme 1: Where, what, who
- Session 1) physical environment + materials
- Session 2) Relationships
Theme 2: Learning strategies
- Session 3) Memory
- Session 4) Organisation + time management
Theme 3: Multisensory activities
- Session 5) Using tactile materials
- Session 6) Using musical activities
Theme 4: Self-regulation
- Session 7) Attention and concentration
- Session 8) Self-awareness and self-esteem
Each session starts with a video giving an overview of the topic. This is followed by task focussing on what teachers can do to support their learners, then a task focussing on what learners can do themselves (encouraged by their teachers). After this, there is a forum where participants contribute to a discussion task and the session finishes with suggestions for further exploration of the topic.
After each theme there is a reflective task to do, which builds into a case study.
Consolidation task:
- Complete your case study showing reflection on your own context, and submit it within 2 months of enrolment to receive a certificate of participation.
